NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH – Why Should We Bother?

The following information was taken from the National Crime Prevention Council website (www.ncpc.org), and provides good background and rationale for participating in the Neighborhood Watch efforts.

Studies show that Neighborhood Watch is effective because:

• It unites neighbors around a common goal—safety and security.
• It provides basic skills to all members on preventing crime and reporting suspicious activities or crimes.
• It builds a base for correcting neighborhood problems.
• It works well with other civic activities.
   

Neighborhood Watch, Block Watch, Town Watch, Campus Watch, Crime Watch— whatever the name, it’s one of the most effective and cost-efficient ways to prevent crime.

• Birmingham, AL:  Thirteen out of 15 neighborhoods had experienced high rates of burglary. After Neighborhood Watch started, 12 of the 15 had no burglaries.
• Lakewood, CO: Burglaries dropped 77 percent after Neighborhood Watch was implemented.
• Cypress, CA: Neighborhood Watch cut burglaries by 52 percent and thefts by 45 percent. The program saved police an estimated $79,000.

§          Don’t be a victim. Take control of your personal and shared property by paying attention.

§          Take ownership – whether you own or rent your home, this is your neighborhood:

-   Keep your curtains or blinds open more hours in the day so you can observe what happens in the neighborhood. Remember that criminals don’t want to be seen.

-   If you don’t have sensor lights at your front door and in your driveway, consider replacing your current lighting.  Check your rules for a picture and description of the allowed lighting for your front entrance.

-   Keep your garage door closed and your vehicles locked.

-   Report any suspicious activity to the Moorpark Police dispatch.

-   Monitor our pool and clubhouse areas.

§          When you leave home, consider leaving a radio or TV on. Use timers to turn lights on and off while you’re away from home. Ask neighbors to keep an eye on your home. 

MOORPARK’S CITY WATCH

The Moorpark City Watch program has changed.

Ventura County residents now have access to real time alerts, advisories, updates, and traffic information via their cell phones or email. This information is accessible by signing up HERE.

Residents can select which local agencies they wish to follow and how they receive the information; either by e-mail or text.

Examples of information provided are road closures, major disaster event updates, community events, media releases.

Household Hazardous Waste Collection Events are FREE to all Moorpark residents; but appointments are required. See the schedule and contact numbers below. Acceptable wastes include used oil and filters, automobile batteries, antifreeze, water and oil base paints, and much more. Call Moorpark City Hall at (805) 517-6247 with questions.
